Woodland Trust

We have created several apps for the Woodland Trust. Each app includes a walking trail with an audio commentary. The apps contain interesting facts about the route as well as detailed information about the wildlife that you can look out for in the woods.

Points of interest are triggered using GPS. Bluetooth beacons are also used, because in places the dense tree cover makes GPS unreliable.

Skipton Castle Woods

Hidden behind one of Britain’s most popular medieval castles, the Woodland Trust’s Skipton Castle Woods in North Yorkshire is a rare ancient woodland habitat. It has a fascinating history that dates back a thousand years. This app includes a walking trail around the woods and has multiple points of interest, each having an audio commentary and information. In addition, the app features details about the wildlife that you might encounter in the woods.

Loch Arkaig Pine Forest

Download this app to accompany your visit to Loch Arkaig Pine Forest, Achnacarry, Spean Bridge. It includes an audio tour that brings to life the cultural history, folklore, art work and wildlife of this special place. Loch Arkaig Pine Forest is one of the UK’s last remaining fragments of native Caledonian pinewood. Woodland Trust Scotland and Arkaig Community Forest are working to restore the forest for nature and people.

Fingle Woods

Fingle Woods is an ancient woodland site located in the Teign Valley on the northern fringes of Dartmoor National Park in Devon. It is a partnership between the Woodland Trust and National Trust. The app includes information about the Fingle Woods – its history and restoration, its plants and trees, as well as the wide range of wildlife you might encounter.

The app also includes a Mindfulness or “Forest Bathing” trail. The trail is a little over a mile long and should take about an hour if it’s done slowly. The aim isn’t to get somewhere, it’s to slow down, unwind and apreciate nature.

Londonthorpe Woods and Bellmount

This app is a visitor guide for Londonthorpe Woods and Bellmount near Grantham, and is a partnership between the Woodland Trust and the National Trust. It includes a trail guide, wildlife guide and accessibility information.

Smithills

Smithills Estate is the largest site the Woodland Trust has ever acquired in England, steeped in history and shadowed by the famous Winter Hill TV mast. The site is a mix of grassland, farmland, moorland, wooded cloughs (ravines) and bog habitats, crisscrossed by dry stone walls, with panoramic views over Bolton to Manchester. The visitor guide includes guided walking trails, a wildlife guide and accessibility information.
