Weston Park Museum

Curators at Weston Park Museum had prepared for the threat of bombing from the very start of the war. Most of the city’s precious artefacts were packed away in metal bins under the museum for safekeeping.

But when the bombs struck Mushroom Lane, at 10.55pm on December 12, 1940, parts of the museum were hit.
Display cases were smashed, exhibits were scattered, and even the famous mummy was shaken from its case.

A fireball tore through the Victorian art gallery, destroying parts of the building.

Weston Park Museum stands today as a reminder that Sheffield’s heritage was also on the frontline during the Blitz.
