The Moor

The Moor – or South Street as it was formerly known –  was one of Sheffield’s main shopping street prior to World War Two.

It was virtually flattened in the blitz. Much-loved stores like Atkinsons, Redgates and Robert Brothers were wiped out as flames tore through the area.

For years afterwards, The Moor stood as a wasteland of bomb sites.

Rebuilding began in the 1950s, when post-war concrete blocks replaced the ornate pre-war stores. The street you can see today still carries the imprint of those two devastating nights..
