High Street

High Street was another key area of the city centre that was hit.

At 10.50pm, a 500-kilo bomb struck the nearby C&A building, reducing it to a smoking shell.

Nearby, Walsh’s – a grand department store with its own orchestra – was also destroyed.

Much of the High Street area from the bottom of Fargate down to where Ponds Forge is today was hit. Newer buildings you can see today like the one housing the NatWest bank were all rebuilt on bombed out sites.
