Atkinsons – The Moor
Atkinsons was one of the best-loved department stores in Sheffield prior to the war. On the night of 12 December 1940, The Moor became one of the most heavily bombed parts of the city.
Fires tore through the street, destroying shops, trams and buildings, and Atkinsons was completely wiped out.
The devastation left The Moor changed forever. But two decades later, in 1960, Atkinsons rose again on the very same site.
Today, it stands as the only independent department store from that era still trading in Sheffield city centre.
